This may look like a chilly image to you, but the white stuff isn’t snow and icicles, it’s sulphur, built up over years in the hills surrounding Pamukkale in Turkey. Shallow pools have formed and it’s very tempting, but not culturally appropriate, to strip down to your bathing suit and cool off in one of them. I was dripping with sweat when I visited in August but made do with a paddle.

Anyway, it wasn’t quite as hot as when my dad and I went on this spice tour in Zanzibar!

Closer to home and the season, it’s winter in Portugal but there are ways of keeping warm, such as freshly roasted chestnuts.
